The study, which was conducted by the Pacific Pregnancy Studies Program at the University of California, Los Angeles discovered that women who experienced high levels of stress and anxiety noticed significant decreases in their breathing and heart rate. Stress and anxiety levels that were high stress also led to increased blood pressure and higher levels of cortisol levels in women. Additionally, one of the most frequently encountered complications of pregnancy is postpartum depression. Researchers recommended that pregnant women utilize massage therapy to help reduce postpartum depression and its associated risks.

A massage therapist during pregnancy might be able prevent postpartum depression by providing the benefits of relaxation and decreasing stress. It has been found that women who received massage treatments were less stressed and an increase in perceived calm after the birth.
